Conflicted...

Or maybe just confused. We here at MW have been pondering this latest attempt of the sherriff to get himself some publicity and get back at Mr. Van Horn for calling him out publically, causing the sherriff to get only half the number of votes as Cheryl Graeff despite his decades of "public service" and name recognition.

We kind of agree that it'd be nice for a community college to support more local players, but we feel really uncomfortable agreeing with Mr. Killquist, even when we're pretty sure Mr. Brewer is on the opposite side of this one.

Its interesting to look at the various team rosters on the website. The JAL womens team has only one player from Chicago (tho Countryside is pretty close), and six players from central or southern Illinois. The Rend Lake College men basketball has NO Chicago players.

So how is it that JAL mens basketball has SIX chicago players? And only four local (three in-district)? Whats that Chi-town connection?

The differences between the hometowns of baseball and softball players is even more startling--the baseball team has ONE in-district player!

If Title 9 gives men and women teams the same recruiting budget, what explains the difference?

Now, we understand that the only reason to have sports teams is to compete and preferably to win. But the college has put a lot of effort into all kinds of missions and goals and key values and such, all based on the role of COMMUNITY college.

Theres just something fishy here.

  1. Todays Southern Illinoisan brings attention to EX sheriff Kilquist's attempt to get the attention he strives for on pertaining to the JALC ATHLETIC DEPT.When did the egotistical Kilquist become a spokesman for the Athletic Committee....Mike Hopkins and Don Brewer where are you at? Brewer obviously is in the background and cannot say alot about this due to the gymnasium named the Don Brewer Complex. I just wonder how that would look if the facility was housing an intramural program instead of a D-1 JUCO program which has been successful overall since the college began its operation.WOULD BREWER really vote for a quota of athletic scholarships to local kids? He just recently voted to move Mens Golf at Logan from D-2 to D-1 to help upgrade the overall athletic program. He also initiated scholarships for the athletic dept. during his tenure as a bpard ,member. Is Kilquist leading this campaign against athletics himself or is someone behind the scenes being very quiet with his thoughts about this proposal and putting his real thoughts into his Lap Dog Kilquist. Mr Brewer did want his son Clay as the athletic director several years ago and attempted very hard to get that job done for his son Clay.
If the board approves Mr. Kilquist's recommendation in the November 26th meeting or even spends more then 10 minutes discussing this crazy notion then my suggestion is this:
Mr. Kilquist apply for the following positions so he can recruit anyone he wishes to better the athletic programs: Athletic Director, Head Baseball Coach, Head Mens Basketball Coach, Womens Head Coach in Basketball and any other position he feels needs the local talent!
I really feel sorry for Dr. Dreith. This has to be the worst presidency position in the nation. The board does the hiring and micro manages all areas and staff members. LEAVE THE STAFFS ALONE-QUIT MICRO MANAGING. The president and staff are hired to do the jobs. The boards job is to approve their jobs. Instead of making headlines and demands; write a memo to the president and ask nicely to department heads of the BOARDS desires- don't try to gain publicity over one small avenue or due to your vendettas.
Bill Kilquist- when his step daughter played softball at JALC had quotes made up and recommended bathrooms in the girls softball and mens baseball dugouts. It was too far for the girls to have to go to the restroom...Absurd amt. of money was required to do that...Should tell you something about Bill Kilquist that most of us already know - Mr. Vanhorn is no longer in the picture at John Logan or athletics so who are the people you are really after or is it just to call attention to him?

  2. I too agree with supporting more local players for a Community College atmosphere. After all, weren't these colleges set up to support citizens of our region, and who pays the taxes? We are not LSU, Michigan State, or Notre Dame. Didn't Rend Lake just win a national basketball title with local talent? How many out of area scholarships go to students in the areas of Math, Science, Nursing, English, History etc.? Perhaps none! What is the mission of a Community College?

  3. you better check the roster of Rend Lakes basketball team last year in a DIVISION 2 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP... they had a total of 4 local players..Their top 8 players were all out of district...You should check out the Shawnee basketball team last year...not any local players.. I think if you want local players to play college sports then they need to do what the players from LARGER areas do...concentrate on 1 sport and play it year around to get to the levels they want to get.
The best players in Southern Illinois rarely want the opportunity to go to a local JUCO..they go to D-1 or D-2 schools =4 year schools. Now after Logan coaches do not get those top athletes they are constantly looking for an advanced player which may want to go to Logan and contribute. Some of them come but when finding out they will not be starters immediately they drop out of the sport. NO COACHES AT LOGAN or any other southern illinois JUCO will not recruit a top notch athlete from Southern Illinois who has the abilities to COMPETE at this level of competition. If the coaches have to be told who to recruit then those who are telling them who they need to recruit should get out and find these kids and compile a list and submit it to the Logan Athletic Director. Fans and Parents and obviously some board members must know who these top athletes are..Turn in a list -They better be quick, good rebounders, good defensively and have good work ethics and good grades with a good attitude or they will not get a chance to participate.

  4. Our suggestion on the matter since Mr. Kilquist is the only one speaking up on the board he should VOLUNTEER for recruiting for the baseball team and the mens basketball team. Volunteers get NO MONEY from the college but they are dedicated to the program like Mr. Kilquist seems to be. He should be on the road throughout Southern Illinois so he can use his sheriff talents and knowledge to evaluate players and recommend the head coaches and paid assistants of the sports to see these kids play. If he wants to help the kids out and he doesn't think the staff is doing a good job of looking at potential players then get your volunteer shirt and cap and go get them.
If you have additional time you should set up fundraising events to raise money for these scholarships you are granting to these local athletes. BUILD and help the program; don't try and sit back and be the hero by destroying what has been built over the past 40 years

  5. Thank God I am not forced to watch inferior baseball players from the district.....thank God I dont have to watch 1 player from Marion...Carbondale....Murphysboro.....Herrin.....West Frankfort.....Crab Orchard....Duquoin.....etc. ......I get to watch players from Puerto Rica....Canada....Indiana .....etc. ..........but we go to World Series every year......well not every year.....well when was the last year..............

    1. Sounds like a response from an individual who has never seen a game and
would attend only if their child were participating. A true die hard fan. Vote

    2. Guess you never watch a Saluki baseball game or any sport?

  6. Last year went to World Series was 2001 I think. Got there due to a good roster and strong pitching from a kid from Ohio.Won't ever get back to the World Series or even contend on winning the GRAC and Region Championship unless you can compete with Iowa teams. No team in Division I Juco baseball has a vast majority of in district players-quite the opposite. Kaskaskia advanced last year with very few in district players. I again stress if there are quality players in JALC district who can compete and agree to come to Logan--They have been seen and talked to. Travel baseball in Southern Illinois shows you that most of the individuals on SI DAWGS and Bullets cannot compete at this level OR THE good ones go to 4 year D-1 schools... (Roper-H'burg) oh yeah , he is not in our district--
Anonymous 7:17am--when did you see the last Logan game? There is a Marion pitcher named Waldrop on the squad this season but his real ambition is to attend SIU-C. Murphysboro ace from a year ago was talked to by Logan but he went to Illinois State but the 2nd line pitcher from Murphy went to Logan. Herrin has not had a great program in high school but a good medium program led by Keith Warren-but no great prospects--good average players who cannnot compete at the D-01 level as evident in their high school standings in the conference..West Frankfort coaches are from Logan program and if there was a standout there who could help Logan they would definitely push them to Logan...Crab Orchard??? wow..wish there was a good one like the old days and DuQuoin has been down for a couple of years but Davis played at Logan last year after wasting his time at SIU-C... you left out Elverado...their coach is from Logan program too.. So if you want to see IN DISTRICT PLAYERS you will have to watch summer Dawgs and Bullets compete; which incidentally play their games alot at Logan field donated by Jerry Halstead and Logan Athletics...They even get the fields ready for their local summer teams... Don't forget Carterville too...they have a very young squad.. Vote for Bill...please have him announce they is running for State Rep..He has my vote too...to get his butt off the JALC BOARD

  7. Guess we got our wish .Saturday So Illinoisan puts Kilquist picture on front page again and he acknowledges he will run for state rep and he will announce that in the future. LOL...got to get more publicity by acknowledgement and announcing. The voters boy who won election in the Logan BOT race in April is now going to remove his Vast interest in Logan after just 6 months of serving a 6 year term to put all of his efforts into a state rep political race. HE SHOULD RESIGN IMMEDIATELY FROM THE LOGAN BOT due to his conflict and confusing motives. This man will stir up more controversy on the athletic department in November board meeting prior to leaving Logan all together if he wins..Notice his security blanket- That he will resign from board IF HE WINS...GO NOW BILL..do us all a favor since you are a voters boy!

    1. The thought that "Brewer is on the opposite side of this one" does support the statement that you at MW might be confused. That is exactly what he would like for you to believe. This is a team effort. The current circumstances allow for Kilquist to take advantage of publicity for his political agenda as the "concern for the local boy" candidate as well as
carry out his and Brewer's vindictive desires against athletics. Brewer has
an axe to grind. Kilquist is the messenger. Someone is always the messenger. Keep your ear to the track MW.

  9. In the November meeting if Kilquist has the intestinal fortitude to bring this ridiculous topic of indistrict athletes-quotas, etc, for the entire board and especially the athletic committee to speak up and back the athletic department! Don Brewer and Mike Hopkins are two members of the athletic committee and we will find out exactly where this Kilquist commitment to downgrade the athletic dept. is coming from. I am sure Mr. Rendleman is NOT supporting this recommendation due to his close relationship with Mr. Halstead over the years and I'm sure Mike Hopkins didn't stir this up due to he and his family being past participants in the athletic dept. SO WHERE DID IT START? WHO on this board is silently trying to get his/her point across quietly and letting Kilquist do all the talking?
Athletics are funded by the auxillary account..not taxpaying dollars so the cry on taxpayers budgets cannnot be used! So what is all the squabble really about? Time will tell us and the time is coming soon!

  10. IF you believe taxpayer dollars do not fund athletics....you are insane

    ReplyDelete
  11. I agree Mr. Hightower had an excellent response and opinion about athletics. FYI: Funds for Athletics are accounted for in the Auxiliary Enterprise Fund. Note Transfers IN of $1.2 mil. in BUDGET, 2014, page 12. Read the financial reports above and then look at athletic budget; then tell me how much taxpaying money is going to athletics

  12. Anonymous Nov. 10, 6:17 : Those two have poor Joke Rendleman wandering around campus mumbling and muttering. Since his method of micro-management
requires him to be on campus every day, the least they could do is give him an office. Maybe there is space available in Clay Brewer's area. You would think by now he would have adopted Brewer's micro-management style of staying home
and using your direct line to the most scared Vice President on campus.

  13. Coaches salaries....Travel.....scholarships....room board........where do Auxillary funds come from.........if it is local prop taxes....state funding...grants...EQUALIZTION......all Tax Dollars.......looking at a budget and bthinking you are an expert is like looking at the ocean and thinking you are a marine biologist.......1.2 Million........doesnt come close to footing the bill.....

    ReplyDelete
  14. Don't think i would qualify as an expert in Marine Biology unless I am an expert in finding a FISH on the BOT AT LOGAN like Madigan did. Anonymous 11-11-5:13pm you failed to mention since i am not an expert in budgets how much of that 1.2 million dollars is coming from TAX PAYERS MONEY. Maybe the person who looks at the budget is an accountant and former business manager at a local JC....or former business teacher or administrator at a local JC which we have a connection to.. IF THE BOARD decides TAX PAYING DOLLARS are paying the entire Athletic Budget--I will retract that.. I know the coaches salaries are based on their jobs as ACADEMIC ADVISORS and I am sure that is paid by the tax paying dollars as all other advisors. But you should know what the auxillary account is and where those funds are derived from! Must be getting on someones nerves when they CALL PEOPLE ON THE BLOG IDIOTS...hmmmm....
    WONDER who that person is?

    ReplyDelete
  15. The money derived from the following is put into the auxillary acct. which is used partially for athletics. Since the athletic budgets are revealed at the end of an audit the final totals are not available to anyone at this point. Each department person is assigned a budget by VP and they must adhere to it; the Board approves the budget so in the long run the Logan BOT approved all tax paying dollars spent for Athletics. My point is that the auxillary account comes from income derived by ticket sales of all activities at Logan, rental fees for all rentals, cafeteria's , vending machines, etc. helps pay the athletic department expenses. Salaries definitely come from the tax paying dollars for the coaches advising job but I DON'T THINK Kilquist vendetta is based on the dollars spent--LOGAN is doing a fantastic job of
finances-- so the "beef" is not on $$$-its based on someones vendetta against the athletic department for one reason or another. The only person in the athletic dept. who is not included in the academic phase of advisement is the athletic director who oversees the entire operation and controls the spending of the budget. The entire "attitude" of Kilquists current publicity seeking agenda is a joke! Maybe his current run for state rep will be covered by TV so he can watch himself on those NEW 80" AND 72" SMART T.V.S PURCHASED by tax paying dollars for the board room.

  16. If you think that Kilquist supports his past employees then you must have never worked for the guy! I will not say worked for the man because the way he conducts himself as a employer is no way a man would! It is a mirage he puts out there that he is loved by all!!

  17. All you have to do is talk to any faculty member , administrator or security and you find out that the man is just a "legend in his own mind".

    3. Elected however many times for sheriff and twice to the college board. WHO in the hell is voting for this guy??

      Delete
  18. The Democratic party pulls out his vote for him; huge in Jackson County. People who do not know or care about Logan just uses name recognition to vote; not facts. Sad but true!

    ReplyDelete
  19. BOARD MEETING TONIGHT...TUESDAY... KILQUIST should announce his resignation from the LOGAN BOARD OF TRUSTEES TONIGHT..if he is a "voters" man as he bragged previously. But of course he has to stir up crap prior to doing that ! Will the ex sheriff really embarass himself by trying to give quotas for the athletic dept in scholarships? Time will tell!

    ReplyDelete
  20. see that the voters boy Kilquist did not resign his position due to his running for state rep. I knew he wouldn't resign until he finds out if he is elected to state rep position. We all knew he wouldn't do what is right for the college but what is best for Bill.
