Time for a Fresh Start at Logan

On Friday, April 3, The Southern Illinois endorsed Ray Hancock, Brad Heuring, and Mandy Little for the three open positions on the John A Logan Board of Trustees. This election for the Logan Board on Tuesday, April 7 gives the college a unique opportunity to elect 3 new people to the Board.

As the Southern Illinois stated, John A Logan is facing a deficit of “anywhere between $2.5 million and $3.8 million” in the next fiscal year.  There are many contributing factors to this perfect financial storm. First, although enrollment at the college has remained steady over the last several years, the number of credit hours taken by those attending students has dropped steadily over the last 5 years.  Second, the State of Illinois most certainly will reduce its contribution to the college this coming year because of its financial condition.  Third, and perhaps the biggest factor, John A Logan can no longer count the health credit hours generated at Logan’s Community Health Center.  The credit hours generated at the Health Center represented $1.7 million in revenue for Logan in the last 5 years.

So, with these daunting financial challenges it is refreshing to see the possibility of electing a brand new slate of Board members. On Monday, March 2, the John A Logan Political Science Department sponsored a candidate forum. In attendance were Bill Alstat, Ray Hancock, Brad Heuring, Mandy Little, and John Sanders. Jake Rendleman chose not to attend and participate in the forum.  At the forum Hancock, Heuring, Little, and Sanders each demonstrated that they not only understood that challenges John A Logan is facing today, but they also articulated a passion for the quality education that John A Logan provides.  Alstat has a nice resume, but didn’t communicate an understanding or passion about education.  Rendleman just didn’t show up, maybe that shows us how important education is to him.

Since the forum, John Sanders has been appointed to the State Board of Education and has resigned from Logan’s Board.  Sanders has been a good Board member and will be missed. But Sanders departure gives voters in Logan’s district to elect brand new people to the Board for the first time in many years.  Let this be a change election and elect a new slate of candidates who can bring new vision and ideas to John A Logan College.

  1. It's not looking like a good night for change.

  2. Yup, Rendleman with the most votes. Why change when the record speaks for itself? His attentive stewardship has been rewarded. Everyone don your Logan Blue!!

  3. The last two elections for the Logan BOT shows me that individuals just don't care enough about Logan or all local politics to go and vote. They want to sit around and complain but the ones that do vote go strictly with the political party they associate with...not the best candidates for the job. Is this strictly in Southern Illinois--probably not but as i reside here i have wondered why there is not any progress being made down south? It just seems to me that the layback attitudes are different and they EXPECT changes somewhat but they really would rather sit around and complaiin then do something that may change the areas.
Why am i bringing this up on this blog..Very simple. Logan board with Jake, Brewer, Kilquist have not BROUGHT up any NEW innovative ideas to improve the educational value of a Logan Degree..but they sure can stir up the "pot" to achieve what i feel is their ultimate reason for being on board--POLITICAL POWER. The tax payers did a good job last year in getting Mrs Graeff on the board as #1 vote getter- she is an educator with top priority ideas on education and sports being secondary..but name recognition and democratic ties got Kilquist back on the board and the beat goes on...Sheriff Bill doesn't know a darn thing or have a clue on balancing a budget, etc or new ideas on changing the college in a better educational way other then his own 'WANTS" and his vendetta against athletics. Jake Rendleman top vote getter this year has been on this board 18 years and what if anything did he contribute other then being a lap dog and lead the college into a 3.1 million dollar indebtness due to physical center instructional phase. He didn't create the problem but he sure was on the board when they approved it all. What new ideas has he brought to the table in 18 years and when was the last time he sat in on a class or taught kids...jesus---moons ago. the new member and big democrat as of today is Alstat? A 5th generation pig farmer is going to lead us to a bigger and better college in education? Now here is another scenario that the administrators and faculty will love: Brewer, Rendleman, Kilquist, Alstat---vs Hancock, Hancock, Graeff-- who is going to win each battle? Top 4 POLITICIANS AND JACKSON COUNTY DEMOCRATS-3 AND THEN THERE IS JAKE...he is whataever Brewer wants him to be at times and whoever you want him to be when he greets you....A POLITICIAN WITH alot of daddys money handed to him in life.
the purpose of this long comment is simply: why would anyone with the credentials to help the college run for the Board when POLITICS rules it just doesn't matter. typical politicians have their OWN agendas and Logan board is no different and we wonder why the southern illinois area gets shaftet all the time! Too late to wake up now..if you didn't wake up this election you never will..Sad for Logan administrators and faculty and the athletic department..nothing good will come out of this election

  4. Maybe you should go back to Bradley/Bourbonnais. Things are so much better up north!

  5. where is Bradley/Bourbonnais? Read the papers and listen to the news about Chicago politics etc. and the benefits of the North vs the South and you may understand how you learn to understand political favors and political favoritism. After being here over 30 years i just don't think you bail out and move to where ever you said that place is and besides if you read the papers they tell us how much better the North is! arent the schools down south suffering while the schools up North get all the benefits? Aren't the jobs being eliminated down south with closings and moving to the north and central part of Illinois. You don't have to look far to Marion Illinois and see a mayor who must have lived up North because he certainly has made agressive moves to get that city moving forward..not at a standstill. Nothing wrong with the south it is just the politics here too!

  6. Rahm Emanuel is not my idea about great Chicago politics, nor are the murders and other crime.

  7. Rahm Emanuel sucks - but so does the way the police have handled the Molly Young and Praveen Varghese cases. Don't kid yourself, Southern Illinois is just as corrupt and incompetent as Chicago. The fiasco at Logan should be proof enough. On the other hand, the climate is nicer.

  8. WELL the regiment is in. Don Brewer new chairman of the board, Kilquist vice pres and Rendleman a token on the chairmans lap. Jane Hancock wanted the job and the vote ended in a tie so they dropped the students vote as required and Brewer won the job. Alstat, Kilquist, Rendleman and Brewer voted for himself got the job done. LOOK OUT LOGAN., THE Crew is back together and will lead to ???? Same people same results!

  14. Who owns the apartments that the athletes live in across the street? Does the average taxpayer know that athletic scholarships include HOUSING, FOOD, TEXTBOOKS, besides tuition? Does the average taxpayer know that ACADEMIC scholarships usually just cover tuition ONLY.

  16. Do the Core Values apply to the BOT and The Leadership of John A. Logan College?
    LOGAN Core Values

    RESPONSIBILITY = FISCAL IRRESPONSIBILITY

RESPECT = GO FIGURE THIS ONE

INTEGRITY = RUNNING A PROGRAM TO FLEECE THE ICCB

COMPASSION = NEPOTISM, FAVORITISM, JOB FIXING, CRONYISM, GOOD OLD BOY NETWORK, PROMOTING OLD FRIENDS IN THE NAME OF REORGANIZATION AND RESTRUCTURING.

SERVICE = SCREWING THE COMMUNITY STUDENTS and EMPLOYEES

Do as I say say, not as I do?

Are these the values we want to inculcate in the students?
Are these the values we want them to emulate?
Is this disparaging Logan or are these facts?
Who will judge the shenanigans of this inept leadership?

  17. Board members Jackie Hancock and Ray Hancock, along with student trustee Brandi Husch, voted against both approving Dreith’s resignation and appointing House. In a statement before casting his vote, Ray Hancock said he thought approving the resignation financially irresponsible.

“I do not think it is necessary or desirable to buy out contracts of employees, including the president, unless there are documented and compelling reasons,” Hancock said.

He added: “Our actions here tonight, in my opinion, are not consistent with generally accepted board policy and procedures, nor with the stated mission of this college. Neither students nor citizens of this college district are well served by these actions.”
WELL SAID JACKIE AND RAY! Would you have said this if your nephew was at the firing line? Inquiring minds would like to know. You two along with Brewer and Snider ET AL are the epitome of nepotism. You are the reason why this college has had such an inept leadership. You are the reason why there is so much slimy politicking at this college. Review the hiring practices over the past 30 years it reeks of nepotism.

“In the absence of a record of poor performance, which we’ve not seen, … I question the reason for whatever buyout there is,” said Kathleen Carl, chairwoman of JALC’s English department. “That’s a concern in a time when we’re struggling financially.”

Kathleen don't fret we are floating a Municipal Bond to cover this next week or increase the tuition by $20 to pay for this and other deficits. Or just retire a whole bunch of people five years in advance of their retirement. Or just fire the whole faculty and replace them with low paying adjuncts, who needs professors? SIU runs their undergrad programs with TA's, so can we. We can outsource every single function of this college to an online source by taking a page out of University of Phoenix's playbook. Student's who needs them? SIU gets theirs from China. Take a hint, this leadership does not care. You step in their way and they will trample you into the dust.

"Last week, Brewer said board members had been “very concerned” about Dreith’s application to run a community college in Kansas. He was turned down for the post earlier this month.

Dreith had said he was disappointed in Illinois’s economic situation and the impact it had on higher education, and he felt it was time to test the waters elsewhere."
Dreith was being diplomatic here is what he really wanted to say and here is what we all know. " This college is infested with despots, who have been appointed by The BOT they are heir apparents who do no work have fancy titles and collect fat paychecks.
A labor force that is discouraged, and cower in fear because a policy can be changed that will write off those who rise up to challenge the leadership.
No way to change bad policies put in place by the BOT and previous administrations.
Example: "The PHED 101 to 106 courses, which could each be repeated multiple times, have been offered for more than 30 years and were ramped up in 2004. Dreith became president in 2012.

The courses had been approved by the ICCB. But on its focus visit, the ICCB found the courses were not being offered according to its standards.

"The course itself was approved as a transfer course for that category of reimbursement, but the way it was instructed did not meet our qualifications," Hunter Anderson said."
The one Quality the Board members, their proteges and the leadership of this college has "SHAMELESSNESS"

"To foster an environment where diverse individuals, groups, and views are valued.
Indeed! We have seen this in action in the past two board meetings.

To serve with integrity and accountability as a model of institutional excellence.
To offer affordable programs and services enhanced by technology in an accessible and safe learning and working environment."

"We foster an environment with nepotism, lies, overpaid phony consultants, nonredeemable agreements with half baked software firms, project managers and consultants who do not deliver what they promise with total impunity, and with utter disregard for the hours of lost productivity, cost over runs on projects, all of which does nothing to advance the goals and mission of this college, nor improve the welfare and well being of the students regardless of the fancy meaningless statistics they throw out from their high horses.
We punish the weak and needy but reward those who cause the college millions in financial losses.
