Who's picking "number one"?

A reader tells us that the JALogan hiring rules say that a search committee submits three names, but not in any order (which is dumb enough). That means the board can pick whichever of the three they like, though board members don't sit through the hours of interviewing. If that's true (anyone want to confirm?) then why is Mr. OKeefe saying the board picked "the number one" candidate for 63 out of the last 64 hires? Whose number one? The unbiased Director of Human Resources? Stinks.

  1. This is not entirely true. Before the new president was hired, the Board hired someone not on the top three list for a key administrative position last year. But after the number 1 person threatened to sue, the Board reversed their decision and then number 1 was given the position she deserved. So, technically yes, they hired number 1...but not before trying to go against the committee's recommendation to get an under-qualified candidate in the spot first.

    1. Names would be helpful. Rumors are not helpful.

  2. Oh, how long will this go on??? Testimonies about hiring by the JALC Board never stop. The current trustees say it's just election year hype but one only needs to review the minutes of the board meetings posted on the JALC website to get a view of the history of this plague, which this board has brought upon itself.

Herb Russell, former JALC community relations director, informed the board in 2006 that the Illinois Community College Trustees Association has a clear recommendation for when a trustee has a close relative applying for a job at the same college. The trustee should resign.

Vote out the status quo candidates on April 9th. Vote for change to rebuild the trust between the JALC board and their employees, students, and the community they serve. Give the new president, vice-presidents, and top administrators, the authority and autonomy to run the day to day operations, including hiring the best qualified candidates. Real change can be accomplished. "The impossible only takes a little longer than the possible" -- Jack Canfield.

  3. When applicants apply, Human Resources (Clay Brewer's Dept.) Reviews ALL applications. They decide who is qualified and then give those applications to the "Hiring Committee." The hiring committee then interviews the candidates and chooses their top 3 choices. I have been told they do rank them in order of their preferences. However, the board can override their #1 choice if they want. This has been done before! If you work at Logan, you may be familiar with the Christy McBride/Matt Yusko ordeal.

Also, when HR calls applicants to set up and interview, they will not tell the applicant who they will interview with. Additionally, it is said that all JALC Employees who meet minimum qualifications for job posting should get an interview. This has not been happening even though the minutes from the hiring committee say otherwise.

  4. No changes will be made unless the public goes out and votes on April 9th. This blog is great to express your opinions but without a commitment from the staff, administration and citizens--there will be no changes in the format of the board. It only takes 4 votes for the political machine to get what they want..until the voters vote those people off the board then it is useless to spend the time and effort to Try and change anything at John Logan.
The staff and administrators must stand up for themselves if they feel they are being treated unfairly. The administration who is the bosses of these board members sons with executive duties ARE INTIMIDATED and cannot regulate the hours and duties performed and report this to the board; then the administrators need to be replaced.
It is up to the current administration to stand tall and the faculty to finally come together to build the morale of the staff for the betterment of the college.
The message has been sent out to the public by a few board member candidates and now it is time for the STAFF of Logan to do something on their own.
