How does it not bother them?

Mr VanHorn said something during the campaign about how the board members who sneaked their sons in as parttime hires then promoted them way past their paygrade were actually not doing those sons any favors.

I wonder how those men see themselves? Does it really never occur to them that they couldn't compete in the real marketplace, just on their own skills? ARe they just so comfortable, or confident, or is it that they just don't care and as long as the big ol paychecks roll in, they have no problem knowing that they've never been in a fair competition and may not even deserve all that money?

I wonder... Self esteem comes from knowing that you succeeded on your own talents and merits, and those men can never know whether thats true, as long as they stay under daddy's umbrella. Kinda sad. For them, and for the college.

  1. As an employee of this institution, I can tell you they see themselves as extremely important. They have absolutely no concern for the real marketplace because daddy has seen to it they won't be subjected to the real marketplace. These sons possess arrogance not confidence. Arrogance is learned and in this case shows the results of parenting. They deserve "all that money." That existence is sad for those sons. Sad for the college is the influence of their fathers. A perfect example of politics. Bad people in charge of taxpayer's dollars abusing the system. None of us should be surprised. You would find similar opinion at the college. Nobody will sign their name to statements in fear of retaliation.

  2. I don't think these sons feel sad about their situation - on the contrary, they know that they can't possibly compete in a marketplace, have no desire to do so, and are happy. And why not?

The Human Resources guy is incompetent, lazy and arrogant, yet he makes some $100K per year, more than any faculty member there, so surely he feels good about himself and looks down at working ants with a contempt. He apparently thinks that his daddy will protect him forever, and it shows.

For several years he was seldom in his office, as he was taking some courses towards degree at SIU during his work hours. I've heard the dr. Mees allowed him to make up (wink, wink) missed work "working" Saturdays and Sundays at his home, and why not - dr. Mees himself was given a sweet deal by the Board when he retired and came back to work for a salary just $1 less than his pension, thus effectively doubling his take-home pay. Why would he deny a sweet deal to sons of his benefactors?

It remains to be seen if the new president will be able and willing to challenge the status quo.

  3. just found out that when Clay Brewer was at Carbondale High School as a teacher and football coach that his uncle Bob Brewer was on the board then and got him hired. I guess the family just keeps advancing him. As the saying goes--it's not what you know it's who you know. I think this pretty well tells it all
